“It was an excellent opportunity to discuss new opportunities in the political and economic cooperation between Latvia and China at the highest political level, with particular emphasis on the advantages of Latvia as a centre for excellence in logistics,” stated the President of Latvia after the meeting.
During the meeting, Raimonds Vējonis stressed that Latvia and other countries of the Baltic region were developing a multi-billion-euro high-speed railway project Rail Baltica, which would provide an excellent opportunity to establish Latvia as a centre of excellence in logistics. Shortly, Latvia will be one of the most critical connecting points of different gauge widths between Europe and the CIS countries. Such a connection will enable Latvia to integrate into the New Silk Road routes and logistics chains even more efficiently. “Ice-free ports, fast-growing regional aviation centre, Riga International Airport, and well-developed digital infrastructure shape particularly favourable conditions for creating new added value in logistics, as well as information technology and telecommunication services,” noted the President of Latvia.
Raimonds Vējonis pointed out that there was great potential for opening direct air traffic between Latvia and China given the increasing number of Chinese tourists. Latvia sees opportunities for new Chinese investments not only in the traditional sectors like transport and logistics but also in services and new industries. Latvia appreciates the joint project of the Beijing Genomics Institute on life sciences, which has already been launched.
President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis pays a working visit to People’s Republic of China from 15 September to 20 September 2018, when he will also meet Premier of the State Council of China Mr Li Keqiang and will participate in the World Economic Forum’s 12th Annual Meeting of the New Champions (Summer Davos) in Tianjin.
