During the meeting, the President of Latvia emphasised, “The public expects further work to improve the situation in the field of justice, in particular by facilitating the hearing of cases as quickly as possible and reducing the variability of court rulings adopted”.
Both officials agreed that the improvement of the legal environment was an essential prerequisite for the development of a safe business environment in Latvia that would facilitate investment in Latvia.
The President of Latvia pointed out that strengthening the capacity and intention of the judiciary and to fight against dishonest judges, as well as improving the procedure for evaluating disciplinary liability and professional performance of judges were crucial. “The public has the right to demand a high standard of behaviour from judges, and the state must ensure it,” stressed Raimonds Vējonis.
During the meeting, the Minister of Justice informed the President of Latvia that he had prioritised strengthening the responsibilities of the court, prosecutor’s office, and the bar, establishment of a fair result-oriented judicial system, and the formation of a safe business environment in Latvia.
It has already been reported that President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis planned to meet with all the ministers of the government led by Krišjānis Kariņš to hear the vision of the Ministers on the assignments to be fulfilled and priorities to be pursued in their supervised sectors in 2019 and later on. Until now, the President of Latvia has already met with Ministers of Finance, Economics, Agriculture, Interior, Transport, Health, and Environmental Protection and Regional Development.
