In his address, President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis noted, “The functioning of the Latvian Provisional Government on Ship Saratov is poetically called the Republic on Water. I would like to say that it was a republic in the hearts of the people of Latvia, when almost everyone believed in the idea of an independent Latvia and was motivated to go on fighting for their country.”
The President of Latvia stated that the events one hundred years ago would always remind us of the heroism and victories that we had gained with our allies. “The victory in the Battle of Cēsis and the landing of the Provisional Government in Liepāja consolidated our belief in our strength and confidence that Latvia would exist,” said Raimonds Vējonis.
“May faith in Latvia and readiness to sacrifice ourselves for Latvia unite us and make us strong!” emphasised Raimonds Vējonis.
While attending events devoted to welcoming Ship Saratov in Liepāja throughout the day, President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis attended the ecumenical thanksgiving church service in Anna’s Evangelical Lutheran Church to mark the centenary of the landing of Latvian Provisional Government from Ship Saratov in Liepāja, and he took part in the procession from the Muitas Square to Jānis Čakste Square.
During the day in Liepāja, the President of Latvia participated in the ceremonial presentation of a flag to the Torpedo Craft Squadron of the Marine Corps of the National Armed Forces.
