President of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda praised the excellent bilateral relations and pointed out that Lithuanians have mentioned neighbouring Latvians as the first nation with whom they would like to build closer foreign ties in a study conducted recently. ‘This shows that we can still deepen our relations, which have already been very close traditionally,’ said the President Nausėda.
On the current agenda of the European Union (EU), presidents of both countries agreed that it is important for the EU to continue to speak with one voice against illegal detention of Alexei Navalny by Russian authorities and persecution of opposition protesters. EU should also jointly support Belarusian people in their demands for democracy. Egils Levits mentioned Latvia’s decision to stop buying electricity from Belarus Astravyets Nuclear Power Plant, which is considered unsafe.
President Levits and President Nausėda also discussed the fight against COVID-19 pandemic, purchase of vaccines and roll out of vaccination programmes.
