Today, President of Latvia Egils Levits, who is on his way to NATO B9 Summit in Warsaw, had emergency call with Federal President of Germany Dr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Sanctions against Russia must be especially tough, President Levits asserted. This includes cutting Russia off SWIFT and freezing properties and assets held by Russian oligarchs in the West. Ukraine also urgently needs military support in the form of equipment, stressed Egils Levits.
Both heads of state agreed that sanctions need to be painful for Russia. They must cause major disruption in Russia’s economy. Latvia and Germany condemn Russian aggression and extend their support to Ukraine.
