On 30 August at Riga Castle President of Latvia Egils Levits presented a Certificate of Merit for a lifetime contribution to Valdis Birkavs, doctor of judicial science, political and social figure.
“Thank you for your personal contribution to the restoration and strengthening of the independent, democratic state of Latvia, which is based on the rule of law. Under your leadership the first Cabinet of Ministers after the restoration of the full functioning of the Satversme proposed and implemented the reforms needed for the development of Latvia and defined our state’s foreign policy objectives. In your long tenure as Minister of Foreign Affairs, you facilitated Latvia’s accession to the European Union and NATO,” President Levits said.
“Today we can be proud that the right decisions were taken back then and the necessary work was done to ensure Latvia’s security and stability,” the President of Latvia highlighted.
