‘Honourable Mr Vestermanis, let me start by congratulating you on your 95th birthday. You are almost as old as our wonderful nation now. You have been through everything our country has been through. And I would like to specifically emphasize three things. First, you are a real patriot of Latvia, and you have been one for all of this time, working and contributing to thriving Latvia. Secondly, you are the keeper of the Jewish heritage. Heritage of a community which has been vital for Latvia and, of course, the Jewish community around the world. It is a significant diaspora with a significant contribution. Thirdly, you're the keeper (and nurturer) of the memory of Holocaust. Latvia has been through good times and bad times, and Holocaust, of course, will always be a part of pour country's history. It is important for the people to remember. So, it is my honour to present this Certificate of Merit to you as a personal token of appreciation for everything you have done up to now. Thank you very much!’ said President of Latvia Egils Levits.
‘I have enjoyed and been honoured to work for the benefit of the people and the state of Latvia. I am not saying this out of sheer politeness, I really mean it as my work shows,’ said Mr Vestermanis after accepting the Certificate of Merit.
