On 31 August, President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs welcomed Jānis Buks, President of the Latvian National Olympic Committee, to the Riga Castle to discuss preparations for the Paris Olympics, Latvian-Swedish bid for shared hosting of 2030 Winter Olympic Games in 2030, hosting of European Youth Olympics Festival in Latvia and other issues, such as sports funding and governance model.
President Rinkēvičs praised Latvian athletes for their top performances this year, especially historic bronze medal won by Latvian ice-hockey team during the World Championships and excellent performance of the Latvian National Basketball team at the current World Cup.
President also urged the Committee together with international partners to keep applying pressure and achieving ban of Russian and Belarusian athletes from the Olympics.
