On 3 February, President of Latvia Egils Levits met with H. E. Ms Sahiba Gafarova, Chairman of the National Assembly of Azerbaijan, at the Riga Castle.
President of Latvia noted the active role played by Azerbaijan in the Council of Europe and OSCE, as well as UN initiatives for solving various global challenges such as Covid-19 pandemic. President Levits underlined the importance of multilateralism in ensuring rules-based international order, including sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations.
Egils Levits thanked Azerbaijan for its contribution to stronger Euro-Atlantic security in scope of NATO missions, especially in Afghanistan. In turn, Latvian Embassy will fulfil the duties of the NATO focal point in Azerbaijan in 2021-2022. Both sides underlined the good bilateral relations between Latvia and Azerbaijan characterised by active parliamentary dialogue and economic ties, in particular in sectors such as transport and logistics.
