Raimonds Vējonis
President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis opened conference “In the Memory of 14 June 1941” organised by Foundation Children of Siberia in the Riga Castle today.

When addressing the participants of the conference organised by Foundation Children of Siberia, Raimonds Vejonis urged to remember and commemorate one of the most tragic days in the history of Latvia forever, when more than 15 thousand of innocent people were deported and the true essence of the communist regime was clearly revealed for the first time in Latvia. “For the occupation regime, a human was just statistics. For you and your families, relatives, that was the path of suffering in exile, broken lives, and the homeland lost forever for many others,” stated the President of Latvia.

Raimonds Vējonis thanked the Foundation Children of Siberia and its leader Dzintra Geka personally for their selfless contribution to the identification and research of the history of deportation and perpetuation of the victims.

In commemoration of the victims of the Communist regime, the President of Latvia shall lay flowers and address the public in a solemn ceremony at 1 p.m. at the Monument of Freedom. Later in the afternoon, the President of Latvia will attend the memorial of the soldiers of the Latvian Army in Litene, where he will take part in a commemorative event at the Litene Cemetery and at Commemorative bonfires.
