On January 9, President Edgars Rinkēvičs met with the Chairman of the Saeima Legal Affairs Committee Andrejs Judins at the Riga Castle. During the meeting, the parties discussed the legislator's ongoing work on enhancing penal legislation, administrative regulation on hate speech, raising judicial efficiency and strengthening the independence of the judiciary.
The President of Latvia stated that the Saeima Legal Affairs Committee had played a crucial role in reviewing the Criminal Law framework and its application in practice to ensure that Latvia can respond appropriately to current threats. It is pivotal that the legislator continues monitoring the development of penal legislation and proposing legal amendments where necessary. At the same time, overregulation and excessive fragmentation of the law, which render application of laws increasingly challenging, must be avoided in all areas.
