On 13 January, President of Latvia Egils Levits visited the photography exhibition ‘Memories of 1991 Barricades’, displayed on the Freedom Square next to Freedom Monument and on the Riga Cathedral Square. Exhibition offers an extensive insight into the personal stories behind 1991 Barricades’ events in Riga and all over Latvia.
‘Barricades marked a turning point for Latvia. It was a ‘do or die’ moment for us. The whole nation consolidated around the Latvian State, its government and parliament. We won. We made the unthinkable possible. People stood on Barricades, defending Latvia shoulder to shoulder. Our nation confirmed its national aspirations. Without those who stood on Barricades there would be no independent Latvia today,’ Egils Levits said.
Exhibition is open until 25 January.
