On 29 June, President of Latvia Egils Levits had a meeting with Professor Kristīne Strada-Rozenberga, Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Latvia, in the Riga Castle. President congratulated Professor on becoming faculty dean and wished her all the best in future career.
Meeting focused on positive changes resulting from introduction of unified professional qualification exam for lawyers. The first exam of this kind in Latvia took place this June. Both sides agreed that this was a necessary step for the development of national judicial system. According to President Levits, ‘as a country upholding the rule of law, Latvia must make sure its judicial system relies on highly-qualified, professional lawyers, and unified exam will certainly make legal education in Latvia better”.
President of Latvia also acknowledged the legal science research activities, comments on legislative proposals and scientific articles developed by Latvian scholars, and their application in order to strengthen the judicial system in Latvia. Expert opinions are also important for those who enforce the laws.
Meeting also focused on 100th birthday of Professor Dietrich Andrew Leber (1923-2004) in 2023. Birthday of this notable Baltic German lawyer, political scientist and historian will be marked with a huge conference. Dietrich Andrew Leber has played a prominent role in researching national independence continuity doctrine of Latvia and reconstruction of national judicial system.
This is Professor Strada-Rozenberga’s third term as the dean of faculty. She has already served two successive terms in this capacity from 2007 to 2015. Professor Strada-Rozenberga was elected the Dean of Faculty of Law after the resignation of Professor Anita Rodiņa who became the judge of the Constitutional Court.
