“Paralympic athletes are an example that the desire to go in for sports and improve oneself are stronger than the health issues and difficulties in life. Paralympic athletes can serve as a model and inspiration for anyone, whose days are quite routine filled and who lack the ability to dare and fulfil their dreams,” said President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis on Saturday, May 21, when opening the Paralympic Sports Day in Ķeizarmežs Sports Centre.

“I am convinced that this competition for everyone is the time to show the achievements resulting from harsh and difficult workouts. This competition is an important milestone, for some of you this is another stage in the preparations for the Rio Paralympic Games and the European Championships, another test on the way to qualification for somebody else, or an active and healthy pastime for someone else,” mentioned the President of Latvia.

During the event, President of Latvian Paralympic Committee Daiga Dadzīte expressed gratitude to the President of Latvia for the encouraging words and presented the talisman of Rio Paralympic Games.

The Paralympic Sports Day is organized in Latvia with the aim to inspire people with disabilities for more active lifestyles and to discover new talents for professional sports. The Latvian Paralympic National Team also participated in the event this year. Overall, there were 500 athletes participating in the competition from all over Latvia, who were competing in 10 disciplines of Paralympic sports.
