On 10 November, President of Latvia Egils Levits met with the Director of the Patent Office of Latvia Sandris Laganovskis in the Riga Castle. Director of the Patent Office presented its new book, ‘ROAD TO EXCELLENCE. Latvian inventors and the world’, to the President of Latvia. This book marks the 100th anniversary of national industrial property protection framework. It describes 25 innovations or inventions of Latvian-origin scientists that have received global acclaim.

President of Latvia and Director of Patent Office discussed the establishment of Unified Patent Court and expressed hope that Latvian representatives will also apply for court positions that will be announced soon and take some of those positions after the selection process. Director Laganovskis informed the President that the Unified Patent Court is expected to start working late 2021, early 2022.

Egils Levits and Sandris Laganovskis also discussed intellectual property protection framework, international patent and trademark validation standards and various legal aspects pertinent to the sector. President Levits noted that strong annual patent and trademark registration trends, especially as far as applications from national institutes and universities are concerned, mean that Latvia’s brightest minds are globally competitive.
