Today, President of Latvia Egils Levits received Defence Minister Ināra Mūrniece at the Riga Castle. Meeting focused on current defence priorities and Latvia’s support to Ukraine as it continues to hold back the Russian aggression.
Defence Minister briefed President about the progress with the new national defence strategy. Ināra Mūrniece also mentioned that the new law on state defence service is being finalised. President of Latvia welcomed the fine-tuning of the legislative initiative done together with Saeima Legal Service. ‘Law must be passed without delay and we should have the state defence service in place as soon as possible,’ President of Latvia said.
Egils Levits and Ināra Mūrniece also discussed national defence classes in schools. Both officials praised the approval of university-level national defence programme for Latvia yesterday.
