“It is very important that multinational battalions of NATO forces will be deployed in the Baltic States and Poland, which plays an important role in strengthening security in the region in the long term. It is planned that a wider understanding of threats will be also discussed in Warsaw, including decision-making on protection against hybrid war threat that is novelty in recent years,” emphasized Raimonds Vējonis.
During NATO Summit, the President of Latvia will have bilateral meetings with President of Poland Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau on July 9 in order to discuss cooperation on security issues. Canada has confirmed that it will manage one of the NATO battalions be deployed in the Member States of NATO's eastern flank.
During the Summit, Member States of the Alliance will also make decisions on the role and further action of NATO regarding the fight against terrorism, control of illegal migration, closer cooperation between NATO and the European Union, the NATO mission in Afghanistan, support for Ukraine and Georgia, as well as other issues.
The President of Latvia also points to significance of close cooperation between NATO and Sweden and Finland taking into account the fact that the Baltic States and Nordic countries face the same security challenges.
NATO is an alliance of 28 Member States, which are united by shared values and common purpose to strengthen defensibility, to promote democracy, stability, and security beyond its borders. Latvia has been a NATO member since 2004.
