On 15 February, within the framework of the Munich Security Conference, President Edgars Rinkēvičs met with NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe, General Christopher Gerard Cavoli, to discuss the presence of NATO allies in Latvia and the readiness of NATO forces and capabilities.
President Rinkēvičs highly appreciated the presence of NATO allied troops in Latvia - on land, in the Baltic Sea, and in Baltic airspace. "It is clear that Russia poses a long-term threat to Euro-Atlantic security. The readiness and continuous presence of NATO forces and capabilities on the Eastern flank are crucial for effective deterrence. If we want peace, we must prepare for war and all possible scenarios," said E. Rinkēvičs. Given General Cavoli’s role as the Commander of U.S. Forces in Europe, President of Latvia emphasised the strategic importance of the U.S. military presence in Europe.
During the meeting, both sides also underscored the necessity of ensuring continued military support for Ukraine, thereby strengthening its position in any potential negotiations.
