“Today we are paying honours not only to those soldiers, who defended the independence of Latvia more than 90 years ago, but also to modern soldiers, who made the supreme sacrifice for Latvia to be safe. We can call them as modern Lāčplēsis,” said President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis, when opening a memorial to the Fallen Soldiers of the National Armed Forces (NAF) at Ādaži Military Base.

 

The President of Latvia said when revealing the monument that we should bear in mind that it was a monument to all the soldiers, who surrendered their lives for freedom and security of Latvia, for the future of Latvia.

 

The President of Latvia said in his speech that we could feel a lot more secure than ever before in Latvia. “We have strong Latvian armed forces and we have good cooperation partners from NATO countries, because we are a member of the most powerful military organization in the world. We are all united by the fact that we are ready to fight for our country, for our values,” said Raimonds Vējonis.

 

The Memorial of the Fallen Soldiers of the National Armed Forces in Ādaži Military Base is established in the honour of the Latvian soldiers who sacrificed their lives during combat missions. The Memorial ensemble is created thanks to public fundraising like the Monument of Freedom once, and the population has contributed their labour in construction of the Memorial.
