On 17 March, marking the opening of Francophonie Week, President Edgars Rinkēvičs visited the Riga French Lycée to meet with students of grades 10 to 12. During the discussion, the President and the students addressed the role and future of French and other foreign languages in international relations and diplomacy, as well as their significance in personal development. As part of the conversation, President Rinkēvičs also took questions from the students on youth involvement in politics, the role of national defence training, and participation in the Youth Guard in strengthening national security. Other topics discussed included opportunities for studying abroad, as well as factors motivating young people to return to Latvia.
"For over a century, students and teachers at the Riga French Lycée have been learning and promoting the French language in Latvia, ensuring that its instruction remains comprehensive and of the highest quality. The study of foreign languages not only broadens our horizons and career opportunities but also deepens our understanding of other cultures and enhances our mother tongue skills. I sincerely thank the students and teachers for their warm welcome and dedication to promoting the French language, and I wish you success at the National French Language Olympiad on 18 March," said President Rinkēvičs after the meeting.
The President's visit takes place within the framework of Francophonie Week at the Riga French Lycée. For 55 years, 20 March has been observed as International Francophonie Day, and in Latvia, celebrations extend throughout the entire month.
