During the meeting, the representatives of the LFF informed about the activities on the Common Agricultural Policy of the European Union 2021-2027 by pointing out the need to find ways to support small and medium-sized farmers on their path towards growth.
President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis has indicated that finding the balance between the interests of big farmers and the interests of small and medium-sized farmers is essential for Latvia’s sustainability. Perhaps new support instruments could be created within the framework of the Common Agricultural Policy, which would enable small and medium-sized farmers to grow faster. Such support could have a significant long-term impact by motivating the Latvian people to return to Latvia and continue working in rural areas.
“It is very important for us to find solutions at national level to enable Latvian people, and especially young families, to work on their farms, develop them, and hence strengthen our country in the regions. Specific measures should follow the slogan “Latvia is not just Riga or the big cities” that would encourage the inhabitants of Latvia to work and live outside cities,” noted Raimonds Vējonis.
