On 21 January, President Edgars Rinkēvičs met with the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev to discuss bilateral relations, cooperation within international organisations, and issues concerning global security. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
During the meeting, President Rinkēvičs highlighted the longstanding positive relations and strong political dialogue between Latvia and Azerbaijan, reaffirming Latvia’s unwavering support for Azerbaijan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders. E. Rinkēvičs also extended his condolences to the people of Azerbaijan and the families of those who perished in the recent passenger plane crash, emphasising the importance of an independent investigation into the incident.
President Rinkēvičs underlined Latvia’s consistent support for maintaining dialogue between the European Union and Azerbaijan. He also emphasised the significance of support for Ukraine and expressed hope that Azerbaijan and Armenia would successfully reach an agreement on a peace treaty.
