19 March, President Edgars Rinkēvičs met with the Minister for Justice Inese Lībiņa-Egnere at the Riga Castle. The discussion focused on the work of the Maintenance Guarantee Fund and efforts undertaken to reduce maintenance debt, as well as the revised debt enforcement procedures introduced last year.
“In the autumn of 2024, significant revisions were made to the procedures for debt enforcement, including the collection of maintenance arrears. The aim of the legislator was to create a debt recovery model that encourages debtors to continue earning legal income while at the same time allowing enforcement from wages, even when they do not exceed the nationally established minimum monthly salary. It is crucial that the responsible ministry regularly assesses the implementation of these new procedures to ensure they uphold the fundamental principle of a lawful state – that every individual must fulfil their obligations – without imposing an unreasonable or disproportionate burden,” said President Rinkēvičs.
The President and the Minister also discussed the work of orphan’s courts, as well as reducing bureaucracy and the administrative burden within the Ministry of Justice's remit.
