Raimonds Vējonis
“Local governments must be able to take responsible decisions in order to increase the quality of life of the population in the long term, to provide jobs and opportunities for nationals to receive high-quality services in education and healthcare,” emphasised President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis when meeting with the councillors of Ludza Regional Council and entrepreneurs of Ludza Region during his regional visit on 11 August 2017 in Ludza.

 

Addressing the councillors of the Ludza Regional Council, the President of Latvia listened to their report on the work accomplished and planned in order to improve the accessibility of the services provided by the local government to the population, to develop the business environment, and to organize cultural life in the region. In his turn, the Head of State and the entrepreneurs discussed the issues related to the impact of tax reform on business activities, especially in the context of the Latgale Special Economic Zone. The entrepreneurs from Ludza Region admitted that much was done to promote business development in the region, but there would still be a need for new support instruments of the government for long-term development of the enterprises. 

 

During the regional working visit, the President of Latvia familiarized himself with the operation of the largest taxpayer in Ludza municipality, Ariols Ltd. The President of Latvia acknowledged that the company’s progress and clear vision for further development demonstrated the ability of local entrepreneurs to produce the products competitive in Latvia and internationally.

 

The President of Latvia also visited the Ludza Local History Museum and the Ludza Crafts Center as well as the restored Great Synagogue of Ludza, which is the oldest synagogue in the Baltic States. “The achievements of Ludza Region in preserving the cultural heritage of the region are welcome. Thus, the local government strengthens the pride of population for their region and its values. This knowledge and sense of belonging to the place where we live are the basis of every strong country,” stressed Raimonds Vējonis.

 

In his turn, when meeting with the representatives of the Ludza Youth Club Umbrella, the President of Latvia listened to the thoughts of young people about the role of the President in the development of state and entrepreneurship, as well as he discussed the values of contemporary society and their role in building a strong society.

 

In the conclusion of his visit, President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis will open a concert called “Calling of the Generations” in the Ludza Castle Park on the occasion of the 840th anniversary celebration of the Ludza City.
