On 9 September President of Latvia Egils Levits visited Kyiv and met with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy to affirm Latvia’s unwavering support for Ukraine and discuss Ukraine’s further needs in terms of political and practical support
President Levits noted: “Not only military, financial and humanitarian, but especially political support is crucial for Ukraine. Latvia is Ukraine’s envoy in the European Union, NATO, the UN and around the world. Together with like-minded states, Latvia demands that negotiations must be started as soon as possible at the European Union level about the further processing of Ukraine’s candidate state status.”
The President of Latvia stressed that people in Latvia feel a deep solidarity with Ukraine, because they know what it means when another country invades an independent state. Latvia also believes that the war will end in Ukraine’s victory, President Levits said.
The President of Ukraine thanked Latvia for the aid it has provided and highlighted that Latvia is among the states which, proportionally, have been providing the greatest amount of support from the first day of the war.
During the meeting President Levits presented to the President Ukraine the Order of Viesturs, which was awarded to President Zelenskyy by the decision on 1 March 2022 of the Chapter of Orders.
In turn, a plaque in honour of President Levits dated 13 April 2022 was officially opened in the Alley of Courage by Mariinsky Palace. The plaque symbolises the day when heads of state first visited Ukraine following the beginning of the war started by Russia.
