Raimonds Vējonis
Latvia appreciates very cordial and close relationship with the United Kingdom. We hope that the Brexit will not change this relationship and cooperation between the two countries will continue to strengthen, as President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis stressed during an accreditation of the new Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to the Republic of Latvia Keith Shannon today.

The President of Latvia stated that Latvia was interested in deepening cooperation on foreign and security policy, economy and trade, as well as education and culture in particular.

Raimonds Vējonis also confirmed that under the current global challenges, cooperation with the United Kingdom in security and defence was very important for the Baltic region and Latvia both while implementing the decisions made at the NATO Summit in Warsaw in 2016 (The United Kingdom is a framework nation for expanded presence of the NATO forces in Estonia) and operating NATO Strategic Communication Centre of Excellence and the Baltic Media Centre of Excellence, and in the integration unit of NATO forces and other formats.

The President of Latvia emphasised that the British Council in Latvia had a special role in the cooperation between Latvia and the United Kingdom in education, whose support ensured organisation of various courses, workshops, conferences, and training of teachers for many years in practically all regions and universities of Latvia. Latvian students can also apply for scholarships granted by the British Council for studies in the best universities of Great Britain.

The President of Latvia invited the Ambassador to participate and engage in the upcoming celebrations of the Centenary of Latvia that would enable promoting the rich cultural heritage of our country and finding new opportunities for development. The Centenary of Latvia will also be celebrated in the United Kingdom with a wide range of different events in various industries.

During the conversation, the President of Latvia also expressed his condolences to the people of Great Britain, the victims and families of the victims in connection with the recent terrorist attacks in Manchester and London.
