The President of Latvia stressed, “South Korea is one of the most advanced countries in the field of science, innovation, and creativity. Latvia also bases its future growth in the development of new technologies, as well as in the free access to public data. This creates additional opportunities for developing cooperation between the two countries in research and innovative technologies, among other things by attracting new investment of South Korean companies in Latvia. By contrast, developing a dialogue to accelerate the certification of food products can significantly increase the export of Latvian food products to South Korea.”
The signing of the European Union-South Korea Free Trade Agreement and the opening of embassies in both countries have facilitated the economic cooperation between Latvia and South Korea which has experienced rapid growth in recent years.
The President of Latvia pointed out that, based on already existing close relations, Latvia was interested in developing closer cooperation in tourism, education, culture, air transport, and other sectors of transportation and logistics.
When discussing the security situation in the Korean Peninsula, Raimonds Vējonis noted the need to find a solution to the situation peacefully and diplomatically while condemning the provocative actions and rhetoric of North Korea. The recent high-level negotiations between South Korea and North Korea are a positive step towards a peaceful solution.
The President of Latvia invited the President of South Korea to pay a bilateral visit to Latvia to join the celebration of the centenary of the Republic of Latvia.
Visit by President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis to the Republic of Korea is the first visit of a top official from Latvia to this country. During his visit to South Korea, the President of Latvia is accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economics Arvils Ašeradens and Minister of Foreign Affairs Edgars Rinkēvičs as well as a business delegation.
