On 26 July, President Edgars Rinkēvičs met with President of the Constitutional Court Aldis Laviņš at the Riga Castle to discuss the issues of execution of judgments of the Constitutional Court and current developments in international cooperation of the Constitutional Court.
President Rinkēvičs expressed his conviction that the constitutional control exercised by the Constitutional Court was a guarantee of the rule of law, justice and the sustainability of democracy in Latvia. Therefore, it is particularly important to ensure that the Constitutional Court has the necessary resources to exercise constitutional control and that all judgments of the Constitutional Court are duly enforced.
Although the judgment of the Constitutional Court and the interpretation of the relevant legal norm provided therein is binding on all state and local government institutions, including courts and officials, as well as natural and legal persons, the law does not currently regulate the process of execution of the judgment of the Constitutional Court. Taking into account that the effectiveness of constitutional control is closely related to the enforcement of judgments of the Constitutional Court, the President of Latvia and the President of the Constitutional Court discussed the practical implementation of the enforcement of judgments of the Constitutional Court to date, as well as possible improvements.
