Meeting between President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs and members of the Historical Research and Awareness Society Andris Tihomirovs, Jānis Šiliņš and Kārlis Sils, at the Riga Castle on 8 September 2023, was initiated by the Society.
‘Despite the fact that history is currently taught across Latvian schools based on standards developed during the School 2030 project, I firmly believe that history should be a separate subject in school education if we want to deepen the knowledge. Especially now, in the current geopolitical and information landscape. Complete history course in schools would reinforce our cultural roots and awareness as the Latvian nation. I will propose this during my next meeting with education and science minister,’ President Rinkēvičs said during the meeting.
President of Latvia also underlined the need to solve financial scarcity problem faced by historical research community in Latvia. Members of the Society shared their position on current situation in the field of history and history communication, including obstacles and possible improvements in these areas.
