During the state visit to the Republic of Malta on 6 February, President Edgars Rinkēvičs met with Maltese entrepreneurs and investors, visited the University of Malta, and met with representatives of the Latvian diaspora.
President Rinkēvičs emphasised the importance of intensifying economic relations between the two countries. “I am particularly pleased at the opportunity for Latvian language technology company Tilde to share digital tools for the preservation and development of the Latvian and Maltese languages. We should also promote direct contact between the people of both countries, such as through the Erasmus+ educational exchange programme,” said E. Rinkēvičs.
During the meeting with Maltese entrepreneurs and potential investors, the President of Latvia highlighted Latvia's advantages, including its developed infrastructure, skilled workforce, and competitive business environment. "Latvia boasts a well-connected port infrastructure with air and sea traffic. High-speed internet provides companies operating in Latvia with a competitive edge in the Baltic Sea Region. Similar to Malta, the Latvian population possesses well-developed foreign language skills that can aid in accessing export markets. Numerous companies are effectively collaborating with Latvian universities to enhance access to specialised skills. In addition, Latvia provides tax and customs incentives in special economic zones," said E. Rinkēvičs.
The President of Latvia highlighted Latvia's specialisations in food processing, wood processing, pharmaceuticals, electronic engineering, information and communication technologies, digitalisation, and renewable energy.
During a lecture at the University of Malta, President Rinkēvičs also emphasised the significance of a rules-based international order and engaged with students on the subject of the role of small states, and regional and international organisations in conflict prevention and resolution.
