On 27 August, President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs visited the Republic of Moldova on a working visit. Together with President of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda and President of Estonia Alar Karis, the President of Latvia took part in the celebrations of the Republic of Moldova's Independence Day and met with Dorin Recean, Prime Minister of Moldova. The meeting with the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, was cancelled due to President Sandu having contracted COVID-19.
President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs and his Baltic counterparts attested their support to Moldova in its journey towards the European Union (EU), and also discussed issues pertaining to regional security and Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
During the meeting, the President of Latvia stressed Latvia’s support for Moldova’s integration into the EU. “We are here on the Independence Day of Moldova to attest our support for Moldova’s integration into the European Union. Moldova can rely on Latvia’s political and practical assistance,” President Rinkēvičs said.
During the working visit, a joint declaration was signed by the presidents of Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania in support of Moldova’s accession to the EU.
Furthermore, President Rinkēvičs together with President Nausėda, President Karis and Prime Minister Recean took part in the official flower laying ceremony at the monument to Ștefan cel Mare și Sfânt, and will give an address at the official concert in honour of the Independence Day of the Republic of Moldova.
