On 15 June, President Edgars Rinkēvičs met with the President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu to discuss bilateral cooperation between the two countries, Moldova's integration into the European Union (EU), the situation in Moldova ahead of the presidential elections in autumn and the constitutional referendum on EU membership, and Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. The meeting was held in Bürgenstock, Switzerland, on the margins of the Summit on Peace in Ukraine.
The President of Latvia welcomed the excellent bilateral relations between Latvia and Moldova, the active cooperation and the launch of direct airBaltic flights from Riga to Chisinau in May of this year. The officials agreed on the need to maintain an active dialogue at both political and expert levels.
E. Rinkēvičs underscored Latvia's firm support for Moldova's EU integration. "Latvia fully supports the approval of the framework for the European Union negotiations with Moldova and the convening of the Intergovernmental conference on 25 June of this year," said the President of Latvia. Additionally, E. Rinkēvičs noted that Latvia is ready to continue sharing its experience and expertise and contribute to Moldova's security and resilience against hybrid threats. At the same time, the President of Latvia emphasised the significance of the forthcoming presidential elections and the constitutional referendum on EU membership in the autumn for Moldova's further integration into the EU.
The President also welcomed Moldova's principled stance in condemning Russia's aggression against Ukraine and supporting Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
