On 30 August, President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs met with the representatives of the United List parliamentary group at the Riga Castle to discuss the formation of the new government. Meeting, initiated by the United List, focused on political alliance’s position regarding the formation of the new cabinet, which it presented to the President of Latvia.
During the meeting, President Rinkēvičs reminded of the Article 56 of the Constitution of Latvia, Satversme, which stipulates that government is formed by only one prime minster candidate nominated by the President of Latvia. This task has been offered to Evika Siliņa, the prime minister candidate previously invited by the President to negotiate the potential cabinet.
‘Since meetings with parliamentary groups elected to the Saeima that took place on 21-22 August at the Riga Castle to clarify and discuss their political position on possible composition of the coalition and prime minister candidate, as well as vision of government’s long-term and short-term priorities, has not changed. I am still confident that the new cabinet can be formed with the broadest possible support of the Saeima parliamentary groups or the majority. There is no time to be lost, hence I have asked the political groups represented in the Saeima, including the United List, to agree on the immediate priorities as soon as possible,’ President of Latvia underlined.
President of Latvia expects the five political parties elected to the 14th Saeima, the New Unity, Union of Greens and Farmers, the United List – Latvian Green Party, Latvian Regional Alliance, Liepāja Party, National Alliance ‘All for Latvia!’ – For Fatherland and Freedom/LNNK, and Progressives to be reasonable and work towards a new cabinet, especially given the fact that during August political consultations all of them expressed their overall support for President Rinkēvičs’ national development goals and immediate priorities.
