On 31 July, President Edgars Rinkēvičs visited Jelgava State City and Kalnciems Parish to get acquainted with the works addressing the aftermath of the storm and heavy rainfall of 29 July.
During the visit, President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs got acquainted with the situation in the streets of Jelgava and Jelgava State Gymnasium. He also visited the Jelgava Municipal Operational Information Centre, which ensures maintenance of the municipal civil protection system, implementation of disaster management measures, and coordinated communication between residents, state and municipal institutions, enterprises, and operational services.
In Kalnciems Parish the President of Latvia inspected the damage caused by the storm and rainfall in the retail store "Aibe" and met with residents. In Valgunde Parish E. Rinkēvičs thanked the employees of JSC "Sadales tīkls" for their efforts in repairing the damage caused by the storm over several days.
"Unfortunately, we must consider the possibility of such natural disasters occurring in Latvia in the future. Today, during my visit to Jelgava city and Jelgava Municipality, I saw that the municipal responsible services are working relentlessly. This natural disaster illustrates the existing challenges, such as the lack of equipment to pump water out of basements, which in turn often prevents the electricity from being restored. Everything that can be done is being done. One of the key insights gained from this storm and the rainfall is the importance of coordination and information exchange between various state institutions and local governments," said President E. Rinkēvičs.
