Raimonds Vējonis
“This year, which marks the 95th anniversary of the adoption of the Satversme (Latvian Constitution), it is essential to evaluate the role of democracy, the rule of law, and human rights in the development of Latvia and in everyone’s life. These values lay the foundation for enhancing peace, security, and prosperity and create confidence in the prospects for the future,” said President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis at the meeting with Chairperson of the Constitutional Court of Latvia Aldis Laviņš on Tuesday.

The President of Latvia stressed that nowadays when the simple answers that the populists offered were prevailing in many parts of the world, it was essential to strengthen the confidence of the population in the basic law of the Republic of Latvia and the democratic state system stipulated thereunder. “Judiciary and the Constitutional Court can do very much in strengthening the belief of every individual in the rule of law and justice,” stated Raimonds Vējonis.

The head of state emphasised that the Constitutional Court had a very important role in evaluating compliance of the adopted laws with the Satversme and the international commitments of Latvia. Raimonds Vējonis encouraged the Constitutional Court of Latvia to pay particular attention to the legislative process in the Saeima, including an examination of whether the laws were drafted and adopted in due course subject to the requirements of Satversme in the cases at the bar of the Constitutional Court of Latvia. The President of Latvia reminded about the laws whose hasty and ill-considered adoption raised concerns not only about their compliance with the principles of good law-making practice, but also about the compliance of the regulation contained in the laws with the interests of the public majority.

While having a conversation with Aldis Laviņš, the President of Latvia praised the work of the Constitutional Court of Latvia in promotion and protection of the Satversme and the values included therein. “It is material that the work of the Constitutional Court of Latvia affirmed that these values are not just written in the Constitution of our country, but they are the reality of our everyday life,” indicated Raimonds Vējonis.

The President of Latvia appreciated the new judges of the Constitutional Court of Latvia, Jānis Neimanis and Artūrs Kučs, whom the Saeima approved at the end of last year, who were recognised as professionals in their field, and whose integrity and suitability for the post raised no doubt. The President of Latvia expressed readiness to accept the oath of judge of the Constitutional Court of Latvia, Artūrs Kučs, and he expressed the hope that both new judges of the Constitutional Court of Latvia would be able to assume their offices in the nearest future.
