On 7 September, President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs met with his Romanian counterpart President Klaus Werner Iohannis to discuss Latvia-Romania bilateral relations, regional security, European integration of Ukraine and Moldova, and other issues on the current agenda of the European Union (EU) and NATO. Meeting was aligned with the Three Seas Summit in Bucharest, Romania.
President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs praised the excellent bilateral relations between Latvia and Romania. ‘Romania is an important partner for Latvia both on the bilateral and international level. Both Latvia and Romania aim to strengthen security and defence capabilities, support Ukraine and Moldova. We have similar positions on priorities within EU and NATO,’ President Rinkēvičs said.
President Rinkēvičs thanked Romania for its contribution to stronger NATO deterrence and defence capabilities, including Baltic Air-Policing Mission. President Rinkēvičs also praised Romania for its leadership in the so-called NATO Bucharest 9 format which has proven to be vital for coordination of key security-related matters within the region.
Leaders also discussed support for Ukraine and Moldova. European Union must start accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova by the end of the year, underlined President Rinkēvičs.
