“The world is increasingly confronted with new challenges and threats, mutual trust is lost, and it does not improve a global security situation. We will be able to overcome those threats only by being united and working together in the European Union and NATO,” noted the President of Latvia.
The President of Latvia has indicated that the values of Western democracy are increasingly being questioned today, and this is done both from the outside and from the inside. The order established after World War II is collapsing, and we must be prepared to respond to it. Therefore strengthening the unity of the European Union and be more active in undertaking responsibility for its own security and in enhancing the role of the European Union in security globally are of utmost importance.
“NATO is the foundation of our security and that of Europe. If we, the Europeans, are not doing more, this foundation can fall to the ground,” emphasised Raimonds Vējonis.
Latvia is aware of modern threats and acts to limit them. The President of Latvia has indicated that the decision to contribute 2% of GDP for defence spending was an important step. However, we may not stop; we must continue working to strengthen not only military security but also our resilience to new threats, such as threats in hybrid security.
Every year, the Munich Security Conference provides opportunities for security policymakers to find ways to overcome modern security challenges through informal dialogue.
