The President of Latvia outlined that the Freedom Monument was the symbol of independent Latvia and freedom of our nation. He pointed out that there was a month left until we would celebrate the 99th anniversary of the establishment of our Republic and we would enter the year to mark the Centenary of Latvia. Therefore smartening of the symbols of our country was of great importance.
“The history of the Freedom Monument testifies the importance of the inheritance left by the preceding generations very evidently, which symbolises the nation’s everlasting values that continue to give hope even in difficult times. Therefore, the Freedom Monument did not lose its significance during the gloomy years of occupation. "
"It was not possible to destruct its significance by the flow of car traffic that passed over here in the past or by the endless stories that were constructed to make us think that this monument was built to praise the occupation regime. “For Fatherland and Freedom”, these were two words in front of the people of Latvia and our visitors that prevented us from forgetting about a free and independent Latvia. They inspired not to become reconciled and to restore the independence of our country as soon as the first opportunity arose,” shared the President of Latvia.
