On Thursday, 5 May, President of Latvia Egils Levits will pay a working visit to Lithuania to attend the launch of gas interconnection between Poland and Lithuania (GIPL) and receive the Doctor Honoris Cause title at the Mykolas Romeris University.
Poland-Lithuania gas interconnector became operational on 1 May 2022. Its total length is 508km and it will also allow reverse flow of gas between the two states. New gas pipeline will effectively expand the existing European gas market and strengthen the energy independence of Finland and Baltic region. The official launch ceremony of Polish-Lithuanian gas interconnection with participation of President of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda, President of Poland Andrzej Duda, President of Latvia Egils Levits and EU Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson will take place on 5 May.
After the ceremony, President of Latvia will go to Vilnius where his working visit will continue at the Mykolas Romeris University. Egils Levits will receive the Doctor Honoris Causa title. On 28 April 2022, Senate of Mykolas Romeris University decided to award the title of Doctor Honoris Causa of Mykolas Romeris University to the President of Latvia, Egils Levits, for his significant contribution to the democratic processes in the Baltic region, for nurturing the ideas of the rule of law, protection of human rights, and European integration, for the development of the European standards of human rights protection and jurisprudence of the European Union, as well as for the publication of distinguished academic works in the fields of constitutionalism, administrative law, legal reforms, and the European Union law.
