Today, President of Latvia Egils Levits attended the book launch ceremony for Deputy President of the Constitutional Court Sanita Osipova’s book Nation, language, rule-of-law state: building tomorrow’ at the Constitutional Court.
In his address to author and everyone gathered at the launch, President Levits pointed out that ‘Sanita Osipova’s book focuses on the role of nation as the foundation of a state. Language, nation and state are based on certain values. It is a progression that created what we have today. It is important for judges to factor that into their thinking to make judgements better and clearer. Verdicts of Constitutional Court also serve as a guidance and a source of reference. They enable society to understand better the mechanics of a judgement and underlying values’.
Egils Levits strongly praised the chapter of Sanita Osipova’s book about constitutional identity in judgements of Constitutional Court. President underlined: "Constitutional identity and core values of Satversme are two sides of the same coin: every ruling of Constitutional Court brings us closer to better understanding of what Latvian State comprises. Deeper understanding of what state is allows us to make better and more meaningful choices. Your book contributes to better-functioning Latvian State.’
