On 27 March, the President of Latvia Egils Levits met with the heads of local governments at the Riga Castle to discuss issues of importance for the development of the municipalities and the whole country. "I believe regular dialogue between the state and local governments is very important. The future of our country will depend on the foundations we lay and the improvements we make," said E. Levits.
The President of Latvia wished to discuss with the heads of local governments the attraction of investments for the development of municipalities after the Administrative-territorial reform, the meaningful use of the European Union funds, the cooperation of municipalities for the growth of the national economy, the quality and accessibility of state and municipal services to the population regardless of the place of residence.
The discussion also focused on how to increase the share of renewable energy in the energy mix and the responsibility of local authorities in the field of civil protection.
The reform of the school network was discussed, with the aim of ensuring a high-quality education for every child in Latvia.
The Chairman of the Latvian Association of local governments Gints Kaminskis, the Minister of Economy Ilze Indriksone, the Minister of Education and Science Anda Čakša and the Minister of Environmental Protection and Regional Development Māris Sprindžuks took part in the discussion on these and other issues with the heads of local governments.
