In congratulating Žoržs Tikmers with his new position the President of Latvia emphasised that the Latvian Olympic Committee is a stable, historic organisation with an immense field of operation and responsibility both at a national and international level. “I am a proponent of gradual, deliberated development, which I believe is befitting to a sports organisation with such a long history as LOC,” Žoržs Tikmers said in commenting on his newly acquired post, “but it is also a team effort.” Žoržs Tikmers is an Olympic silver medalist in rowing.
When discussing his priorities in the management and development of the organisation, as the new president of LOC Žoržs Tikmers noted that LOC will draft its first strategic development plan for the period until 2030, which will include not only the traditional task of organising athletic events, attracting funding and ensuring the functioning of the Olympic movement, but also the modernisation of sports infrastructure in Latvia, so that the country can host international level events motivating not only existing, but also future athletes and coaches. Furthermore, LOC will promote children’s interest in professional sports through various activities, and will aim to promote physical activity in Latvian society to allow the nation to grow strong and athletic.
The President of Latvia and Žoržs Tikmers also discussed the current and preferable level of financial support for Latvian Olympic athletes (including veterans), as well as issues related to the functioning of Olympic sports centres, training of world-class athletes, the upcoming Summer and Winter Olympics, doping, LOC membership and its management.
