President of Latvia outlined his position on current priorities and underlined the necessity to reform higher education which would not only improve the quality of higher education, but would also promote the development of science in Latvia. According to the President, the existing gap between science and higher education impedes comprehensive development of both areas.
Egils Levits also pointed out the need for judiciary reform, better law-making and enforcement. Legislature must ensure that laws, their purpose and content are understood by all subjects and those who are responsible for implementation of the laws. President Levits also presented his arguments in support of the establishment of National Council. Council would bring the law-making to a new level of quality that meets current demands, with specific focus on sustainability.
Discussion also touched upon tax system issues, development of health care, education ICT and other factors that influence the business environment.
