On 1 March, President of Latvia Egils Levits met with head of judicial bodies to discuss the development priorities of judicial system.
President of Latvia Egils Levits met with Justice Minister Inese Lībiņa-Egnere, President of Constitutional Court Aldis Laviņš, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Aigars Strupišs, Chair of the Saeima Legal Affairs Committee Andrejs Judins, Chair of the Judicial Policy Subcommittee of the Saeima Legal Affairs Committee Inese Kalniņa. Meeting focused on the strengthening of institutional independence of judicial branch, including division of responsibilities between Ministry of Justice, Judicial Council and Court Administration.
Another topic discussed during the meeting was the state bar exam, the professional certification of future lawyers, and its recent results. Justice Minister Inese Lībiņa-Egnere told President Levits that after 20 March, the deadline for exam result appeals, Ministry of Justice will embark on in-depth analysis of exam results to understand how they relate to accreditation of law university programmes.
Meeting also focused on other law and justice policy priorities. All participants agreed that such format of meetings is vital for better planning of judicial priorities and should be continued for successful development of the sector in future.
