On 5 February, President Edgars Rinkēvičs met with the President of the Supreme Court Aigars Strupišs, the Prosecutor General Juris Stukāns, the Chairman of the Saeima Legal Affairs Committee Andrejs Judins, and the Minister of Justice Inese Lībiņa-Egnere at the Riga Castle. During the meeting, the President and senior justice officials reviewed the conclusions from the judicial sector in 2024 and discussed expected priorities for 2025, including efforts to strengthen judicial independence and improve the quality of judicial work.
President Rinkēvičs reaffirmed that national security remains a constant priority, which must be viewed from multiple perspectives. The parties discussed the role of the judiciary in a self-defending democracy and the need to enhance public trust in state institutions.
"I am pleased that, as of 1 January this year, the Justice Academy has started its work. The Academy will play a crucial role in ensuring a sustainable and effective training system for judicial and prosecutorial officials and staff, thereby strengthening Latvia’s judicial system," said President Rinkēvičs.
The meeting also covered the role of the justice sector in reducing bureaucracy and enhancing Latvia’s competitiveness.
