President Levits and Professor Veisbergs discussed the proposed designation of the 15 October as the Official Language Day suggested by the President. Official Language Day would be a national event aimed at raising awareness about the positions of Latvian in today’s world. President Levits added that 15 October 1998 marks the adoption of the constitutional provision on Latvian as the official language of Latvia by the parliament. Moreover, 15 October this year will also be the day when the opening of Volume X of ‘Language and state’ will take place in the Riga Castle.
President Levits thanked Andrejs Veisbergs for professor’s many years of promoting official language policy and urged Professor Veisbergs to form a new partnership. Andrejs Veisbergs confirmed his readiness to cooperate and both sides agreed to transform the previous format of the Official Language Commission into a broader and less-formalised platform available to wider spectrum of scientific disciplines and Chancery of the President of Latvia. This platform would serve as the joint basis for scientific debate and conferences. Egils Levits and Andrejs Veisbergs also agreed that one of the topics of such debate should be the use of Latvian in science.
