On 1 July, President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs met at Riga Castle with Minister of Defence Andris Sprūds. The officials discussed the work being done in creating the Selonia Military Training Ground, the involvement of the National Armed Forces in reinforcing the Eastern border, as well as issues pertaining to the state defence service and cooperation with the defence industry.
“At the moment, the creation of the Selonia Military Training Ground is one of the main tasks of the defence sector. On 28 June I visited the Selonia Military Training Ground site in Aizkraukle District. I saw in person the speed at which the works are being done, which must be maintained at least at the same level because there is a great amount of work to still be done so that Latvia may provide the necessary support as the host country to its NATO allies. This is not impossible. I expect all stakeholders to perform their work without undue delay, and in 2026 the largest military training ground in the Baltic States will be able to fulfil Latvia’s obligations against its allies,” the President of Latvia said.
During the meeting, the President of Latvia communicated the intention of regularly and in person following up on the progress regarding the Selonia Military Training Ground.
