On 2 September, President of Latvia, Egils Levits, visited the National Library for the Blind and contributed an audio recording of the preamble of Constitution of the Republic of Latvia with his comments to its collection.
During his visit to the National Library for the Blind, President of Latvia took a tour of the library building and got acquainted with its collection, including braille and large print books, audiobooks and easy read items. President Levits also met with library’s sound recording and reproduction studio unit which is responsible for everyday audio recording and editing activities of the library.
National Library for the Blind is a public body governed by the Ministry of Culture. Its mission is to spread culture, education and information through access to books and information for those unable to read standard print. Library, which was officially opened in 1962, was actually created in the second half of the 19th century when Latvia launched social rehabilitation programmes for the blind. National Library for the Blind operates seven branch offices across the biggest Latvian cities: Balvi, Cēsis, Daugavpils, Jelgava, Liepāja, Rēzekne and Ventspils.
