During the meeting, the officials discussed the decisions made at the NATO Summit in Warsaw to strengthen defensibility of the Alliance, including on deployment of four NATO multinational battalions in the Baltic States and Poland. “Enhanced forward presence in the countries of the Eastern flank is a serious guarantee of regional stability and security,” said Raimonds Vējonis.
He also noted that Canada's decision to become a lead nation of the NATO multinational battalion in Latvia is a confirmation of ever closer cooperation between the two countries. “Canada is a strong and reliable partner for Latvia,” stressed the President of Latvia.
After visiting the military exercise area in Ādaži, Harjit Sajjan appreciated development of the Latvian military infrastructure and he expressed confidence in the successful cooperation between the armed forces of both countries.
Raimonds Vējonis and Harjit Sajjan agreed that Canada's decision to become a lead nation of the NATO battalion would contribute both to military cooperation, but also economic and political relations between the two countries.
During the meeting, both officials also discussed opportunities for broader cooperation among the NATO Member States in order to confront the challenges of the international security situation.
