Raimonds Vējonis
President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis shall stay on a working visit to the Kingdom of Sweden from January 9 to January 11 in order to stress the need to strengthen regional cooperation in the field of security and defence and to discuss current issues and cooperation with the officials of Sweden.

 

The President's visit comes at a time, when Latvia has undertaken the duties of a coordinating country for Baltic and Nordic cooperation in the NB8 format. Latvia has proposed strengthening the regional security and supporting the Eastern Partnership countries to be the most important issues for Baltic and Nordic co-operation in 2016. Baltic and Nordic region is characterized by close economic cooperation, and it is considered as a single region, which is characterized by growth, competitiveness, wide application of information and environmental technologies.

 

During meetings with the Swedish officials, Raimonds Vējonis will discuss further strengthening of regional cooperation, with particular emphasis on cooperation in the field of security and defence. “The recent security challenges can only be overcome by joint efforts,” said the President of Latvia. He pointed out that the Baltic and Nordic countries faced with the same security challenges, and hence the security of the region was perceived as a whole.

 

During the visit, topical issues of bilateral cooperation, challenges caused by migration and terrorist threats, the situation in Ukraine and Syria, and cooperation with the Eastern Partnership countries will be also discussed.
